Hamsters have become very popular pets nowadays due to their reduced size and their cuteness. We have to admit that. Hamsters are cute and tiny furry creatures that are fun to have around. But before buying a hamster, you must think about hamster cages, because your future little fluffy friend will surely need a home.

There are all kinds of hamster cages out there, and we know that having too many options might feel overwhelming for most people, we decided to offer here a short guide on the main types of hamster cages, highlighting the pros and cons of each option.

Hamster Cages – The Different Types

First of all, you need to know what species your future hamster will be, because in some cases, he might need more space than others. For example, the Syrian Hamster will need a much bigger cage than a Dwarf Hamster. In general, you should aim for at least 450 square inches of floor space for your hamster to feel comfortable.

Secondly, you should opt for a cage with a plastic bottom at least 1.5 inches deep for it to hold the wood shavings that will serve as bedding for your future little friend.

Now we’ll take a look at the main three types of cages.

Wire Hamster Cages

Wire cages are the most common of all because they are cheaper that the others in general, they provide very good ventilation, good access and the frame of the cage makes for a perfect climbing environment for your hamster. You can find them almost anywhere and they have a good grip if you need to move it around.

On the other side, the cons are that some hamsters might try to chew or nibble the bars of the cage, which isn’t good for your little friend’s teeth. Another bad side of this type of cage is that your hamster can fall from the bars when climbing, and if the height is too great, he might get injured in the process.

Aquarium Hamster Cages

The nice side of having an aquarium for your hamster is that you get to observe him very well. The aquariums are sturdier than the others and there aren’t parts to chew, which is good. Also, there’s no way for your hamster to escape and get lost or hurt around the house.

The bad sides of an aquarium are the poor ventilation, difficult access to the hamster, they’re heavier and can be very difficult to clean, leading to lack of hygiene for your little fluffy friend. They are also more expensive than other cages.

Plastic Hamster Cages

The plastic cages with all sorts of colored twisted tubes might look like a great home for your hamster but they’re actually not that good.

On the plus side, they look nice, they provide enjoyment for the observer, they’re hard to escape but that’s about it.

The bad sides are that they’re very poorly ventilated, extremely complicated to clean, it’s hard to get to the hamster, they can be very expensive, and most often than not, they won’t provide enough space for your little friend to run around and they can even get stuck in those plastic pipes.

While there are plenty of options out there, now you’ve got an idea of what to look for.

Buyers Guide

When it comes time to choosing the best cage for your furry pet, there are a few things you need to think about.

Hamsters are creatures who like to build nests and surround themselves when they go to sleep. They also need exercise when they are in their cages. They also need to graze on a lot of food throughout the day and rehydrate with water.

A good hamster cage should give them all of this and more. Our focus here is on the safety and security of your hamster but what else should you be looking for?

Size

All hamsters are small, but that does not mean that you should settle for any small cage. The cage should be sized so that the hamster can run around and get enough exercise. The recommended minimum size for a hamster cage is 30 x 15 x 15 inches. You also want to make sure that you have enough space in the bottom of your cage for wood shavings. The plastic container at the bottom of the cage should be at least an inch and a half deep. This will allow you to cover the entire bottom of the cage with wood shavings without them spilling out onto the floor.

Wire vs. Plastic

There is not much difference between a wire and plastic cage. The one thing to make sure is that the bottom of the cage is solid. Stay away from the mesh wire bottoms; they are not good for your hamster’s feet. The one thing you need to look at is the distance between the wires on the sides of the cage. Hamsters love to climb and will climb up a plastic or wire cage. Look out for spaces which are small enough for your hamster to get its head stuck in. The spaces should be wide enough to get its head in and out (or not at all) but not its body.

Modular System?

You may have seen the plastic modular systems where there are long plastic tubes stuck together with small landing areas in between. We do not recommend these over a cage for your hamster. For one, the exercise your hamster will get running through the tubes is not the same as what it will get in the base of a cage and climbing the sides. There is also the possibility of your hamster getting stuck in it.

When it comes time to clean your hamster’s home, it is much easier to clean a cage than a modular home. It is also easier to get your hamster out; your hamster may refuse to come out of one of the tubes.

We recommend choosing a spacious cage for your hamster and one with a wheel to get some exercise in.
